Accessibility must be a priority at the MakerSpace (posted by john a gorman)
As we move forward to planning for new spaces, I ask we be mindful of this problem.
Standing desks and Pub tables have a great aesthetic. But they are obstacles or unusable by important members at the MakerSpace. People with hip issues, knee issues, back problems, mobility issues, people with wheel chairs... A large slice of people experience these challenges temporarily or permanently.
I am delighted to see committees addressing this issue.
3D Fab has address the problem of accessibility of the computers at standing desks by making select computers in the Common avail for 3D design and loading print jobs to the 3D printers.
Laser will make the 2 sitting computers able to send jobs to the Epilog Zing.
Logistics will address the issue in the galley.
Request: Please take a look at your space and see if there are potential problems for fellow members. Work towards including everyone.
Single Points of Failure (posted by john a gorman)
We have grown far beyond a small group of folks into an immense, rich, dynamic organization approaching 2,000 members. Yet we have single points of failure, where systems would break down should one person leave or get hurt. A few of these are:
- Square payment system. Currently, it runs thru one person. It is not documented in the admin wiki.
- Discord, the messaging platform has only one admin.
- Dallas MakerSpace credit cards on based on one member's account, not the Dallas MakerSpace.
Solution:
Let's identify this problem areas and eliminate them. It is not difficult to have a backup or two, and document the control processes appropriately.
If it is not possible to share the responsibility, we must move to different systems.
