- There should be a "Biology You Can Eat!" class happening at Sci-Tech this month, I do not have a concrete date yet.
- Civic Hacking - Stephen Wylie
- It was great to see several new faces at our meeting last Saturday!
- We are looking to have staggered workdays for coders and workdays for Open Data evangelists every few weeks. The evangelists will promote the benefits of open data and civic apps to governments & organizations, and the coders will help make these benefits into a reality. - Stephen is thinking about hosting an "Introduction to Socrata Open Data API" class & programming workday near the end of March; more details TBA. This would be a good time to learn what open data can do, as we'll examine several types of datasets and how to query them for our own apps. Some familiarity with JavaScript is recommended.

- Reminder: You don't have to join the committee to be trained on how to use the laser.
- Reminder: Don't save your work to the desktop of the computer. It WILL be erased. Save it in the proper folder in the Thawspace drive or the network drive.
- Reminder: The laser committee does have a list. ([email protected]) USE IT if there is an issue with the laser. Don't try to repair it yourself.

- The HAAS is fully operational, but has some glitches that need to be addressed
- CRT blanks out occasionally, requiring a tap to bring it back up

- The tool changer jams during changes occasionally
- This was reported by the seller. There is a component on the mill that needs to be cleaned that will hopefully correct this

- The new storage rules are now in effect for the project storage shelves. The shelves are now much more usable, rather than being full of junk for months on end.
- A new router has been ordered, as the one we are using is failing. It should arrive on Friday.
- We built a 2nd computer for the Studio (with Deep Freeze installed) and a computer for the HAAS Mill.
- Paul Brown has installed an announcements system that uses speakers placed throughout the space to notify members of events/classes.
- We are looking to build additional personal storage shelves or change one of the project shelves to personal storage.

TEDx@UTA (Oguz Yetkin)
TEDx@UTA will be March 22nd 2014 at
University of Texas at Arlington Rosebud Auditorium 300 W 1st St, Arlington
We will be having a table and installation. I'm currently working on the installation right now (Oculus Rift based remote presence robot). I would like approval for funds for the Oculus Rift and the related hardware. Anyone else who would like to help me can contact me at [email protected]
New Metal Fabrication Committee (Andrew Floyd)
I'd like to propose a new committee for Metal Fabrication in order to acquire such new equipment as able to promote all types of metal working at the Dallas Makerspace, to train any and all individuals about safe use of metal fabrication technology, and maintain a clean, orderly, and safety focused shop space.
First and foremost, we'll need our own inert gas storage cylinders, specifically 75/25 blend argon. Currently we only have one argon cylinder, meaning only one machine can be run at a time. More cylinders means more running machines, which translates into larger classes and more welding activity at DMS.
Second, a Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding machine. Specifically a Miller Diversion which is a small water cooled machine suitable for stainless steel and aluminum welding. Our new committee will have the means and expertise needed to reliably train individuals and groups how to TIG weld with this machine.
Third, we will need our own Hypertherm/Thermadyne plasma cutter with a 3/4" thick material cutting capability. This plasma cutter may be used by hand to cut pieces of material to dimension, and in the future with a plasma table to CNC cut workpieces.
We recognize the serious investments that this equipment represents, but we know that with new equipment we stand a better chance to offer reliable tools and training to the membership without the uncertainty of faulty machinery or costly retrofitting.
A high-balling estimate is around 6000 dollars for all of this equipment. But we have the expertise and membership interest in Welding to support this. I'll have a price list with me!
