Marbling

Class description

Learn Traditional Turkish, Ottoman marbling - Ebru workshops at Dallas makerspace. Lessons are 2 hours with our local professional teachers. Turkish Paper marbling is a method of aqueous surface design, which can produce patterns similar to marble or other stone, hence the name. You can also draw flower figures which is traditional in Ottoman Art. The things you can capable of painting with Ebru is unlimited. The patterns are the result of color floated on either plain water or a viscous solution known as size, and then carefully transferred to a sheet of paper (or other surfaces such as fabric). This decorative material has been used to cover a variety of surfaces for several centuries. It is often employed as a writing surface for calligraphy, and especially book covers and endpapers in bookbinding and stationery. Part of its appeal is that each print is a unique monoprint. Objectives

• Students will be educated in how to prep materials for marbling, including on how to prep the water bath, paper/cloth
• Students shall learn how to marble in at least one style and be given homework to learn and practice from Diane Vogel Maurer’s marbling book

• Individuals that are interested in marbling on paper, cloth, plastics, and ceramics.

Agenda

• Prior to class day, the size shall be made up and material shall be prepared by cutting at least two sheets of paper from a roll per student, including four for the instructor, and soaked in the amortant then laid out to dry.
• Day of class, Upon student arrival the instructure shall cover

 * What is marbling and origins
 * Discuss setting up the size and medium
 * Discuss paints and tools
 * Demo making at two prints of different styles
 * Have each student claim a sheet and walk up to the bath for their attempt to make one
 * Students will put a piece aside to dry
